Book Accommodation First

Hotels near the basilica fill up fast - especially on weekends, school holidays, and during the Annual Feast (Aug 29–Sep 8). Book at least 2–4 weeks in advance for normal visits. For the Annual Feast, book 2–3 months ahead. Compare prices on Booking.com, Agoda, and MakeMyTrip before deciding.

Choose Your Route to Velankanni

The most common routes to Velankanni: (1) Bus from Chennai - TNSTC and private buses run daily, journey ~7–8 hours. (2) Train to Nagapattinam, then bus/taxi ~12 km to Velankanni. (3) Bus from Trichy or Coimbatore - multiple daily services. Private taxis can be hired from Nagapattinam and Chennai.

Know the Mass Schedule

The first mass of the day is at 5:30 AM (Latin Mass). Tamil and English masses run throughout the day until the Evening Mass at 6:00 PM. If you want to attend mass, plan to arrive the previous evening so you can attend the early morning mass refreshed.

What to Pack

Essentials: modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees, comfortable walking shoes, a light shawl or dupatta (for women), water bottles, cash (ATMs available but can get crowded), any offerings you wish to make (flowers, candles - available in Sannathi Street shops), and your pilgrimage documents if you are part of an organized group.

Dress Code at the Basilica

Modest dress is strictly observed. Shoulders must be covered for both men and women. Knees must be covered. No shorts, sleeveless tops, or revealing clothing. Men are asked to remove footwear at the basilica entrance. Dress code is enforced at the gate - come prepared to avoid being turned away.

Inside the Basilica

The main basilica has separate areas for different masses. Confession is available daily from 5 AM to 8 PM with multilingual confessors. You can light candles at designated areas. The beach near the shrine is a popular spot for quiet prayer after mass. Photography inside the church during mass is not permitted.

Pilgrim Tip

Arrive the evening before your planned mass, especially if you want to attend the 5:30 AM Latin Mass. The area around the basilica gets very busy from early morning. Check in to your hotel, get rest, and walk to the church in the dark - it's a special experience.
