AYA Lodge sits 793 metres from the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health - approximately a 10-minute walk or a short auto-rickshaw ride. Rated 3.1★ from 35 guests on Google Maps, it is a budget option that earns most of its bookings through location rather than facilities. Pilgrims who prioritise a short walk to the basilica over polished amenities will find it does the job; those expecting regular housekeeping or reliable air conditioning may be disappointed.
Location
AYA Lodge is on Kovil Araya Street, opposite Dravida Hotel, in the Uthiyalatha area of Velankanni. At 793 metres, the walk to the basilica takes roughly 10 minutes along the main pilgrim lanes. The beach is within a similar distance - a genuine convenience for families who want to combine daily Holy Mass with time by the shore.
During the annual feast of Our Lady of Good Health, the lodge’s upper floors offer views of the procession route, which several guests mention as the main reason they return despite other shortcomings. That combination of church access and beach proximity is what keeps AYA Lodge booked through busy seasons.
Rooms and Amenities
AYA Lodge operates across three floors with no lift. This is a meaningful limitation for elderly pilgrims and anyone travelling with heavy luggage - upper-floor rooms require stair climbing. Wheelchair accessibility is not confirmed for this property; pilgrims with mobility needs should contact the lodge directly before booking to ask about ground-floor availability.
Most rooms are fitted with Indian-style toilets. Guests requiring Western-style facilities are strongly advised to confirm room type when calling ahead. Air conditioning is available in some rooms, though guests have reported inconsistent performance. A kitchen facility is noted positively by some guests. The property is family-friendly and suitable for pilgrims travelling with children.
Pricing sits firmly in the budget range. For pilgrims focused on minimising cost while staying within walking distance of the basilica, the rates are the primary draw.
What Guests Say
Reviews are mixed, with a recent average of 3.7★ across newer submissions - a modest improvement over the overall 3.1★ score.
Positive feedback centres on location and value. Fabian Susainathan writes: “Very reasonable. 500 feet from the church. 500 feet from beach.” Deepan Maya calls it “the best lodge near the church” and notes that the room and kitchen are well-maintained. Bharath T , reviewing seven months ago, describes it simply as “budget friendly, nice clean room, near to church.”
A more critical account comes from Fiona Fernz : “The staff only helps if you tip them… they don’t change the bedsheets or pillow cases, room cleaning is not done. AC doesn’t work. Old and dusty place.” She also flags the absence of a lift and the prevalence of Indian-style toilets across most rooms.
The honest read: AYA Lodge works for pilgrims who value a short walk to the basilica and can live with basic standards. It is not a comfortable choice for those who expect consistent cleaning, working AC, or accessibility support.
