Location
S.M.LODGE is located on Uthiriyamatha Kovil Street, Velankanni - one of the main approach roads that pilgrims use when walking toward the basilica. At 705 metres, the route is walkable for most pilgrims, though elderly visitors or those travelling with heavy luggage may prefer the short auto-rickshaw ride available outside the lodge.
The street sees steady pilgrim traffic throughout the year, with the busiest periods around the Feast of Our Lady of Good Health in September and during novena seasons. Being on a named street rather than a narrow lane makes it easier to give directions to auto drivers, especially for first-time visitors to Velankanni.
Rooms and Amenities
S.M.LODGE offers rooms suited to families travelling together. Guest reviews highlight that the rooms are clean and reasonably priced, making the lodge a practical choice for pilgrims who want a comfortable base without overspending.
One of the lodge’s most frequently mentioned practical features is its parking area. According to guests, the parking space is large enough to accommodate four buses at a time - a significant benefit during feast season when large parish groups arrive by chartered vehicle. Families who drive to Velankanni will find parking considerably easier here than at lodges closer to the basilica where space is tighter.
The lodge is noted as being safe and suitable for families with children, with guests mentioning the open space available for children to move around. Rooms are described as nicely maintained with good facilities for the price.
Note: some older reviews mentioned that the property had gone through a maintenance period and needed refurbishment. More recent visits suggest conditions have improved, but pilgrims planning a stay during peak season are advised to confirm the current room status when booking.
