Velankanni to Trichy by Bus
Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) is one of the most common gateways for pilgrims heading to and from the Velankanni shrine — it has a major railway junction and an airport, so many visitors arrive in Trichy first and then continue to Velankanni by road. The route is well served by both TNSTC government buses and private operators.
The road distance between Velankanni and Trichy is about 160-165 km, and the journey takes roughly 3.5 to 4.5 hours depending on the service and traffic.

Government buses depart from the Velankanni bus stand, a short walk from the shrine. Services are most frequent in the early morning and late evening.
Trichy to Velankanni Bus
Travelling the other way is just as easy. From Trichy, board at the Chathiram bus stand or Central bus stand:
- TNSTC government buses run through the day, many routed via Thanjavur → Nagapattinam → Velankanni.
- Private AC buses are best booked ahead during weekends and the feast season.
- Expect the same 3.5 – 4.5 hour journey and similar fares as the reverse direction.
If a direct bus isn’t available at your time, take any Trichy–Nagapattinam bus and change at Nagapattinam — buses to Velankanni run every few minutes.
Route via Nagapattinam
Nagapattinam sits just 12 km from Velankanni and is a major junction on this corridor. Most buses on this route pass through it. This is useful to know because:
- Nagapattinam has far more frequent connections to Trichy than tiny Velankanni does.
- You can also catch a train from Nagapattinam toward Trichy.
- If you miss the last direct bus, a quick local hop to Nagapattinam keeps your options open.

Travel Tips for Pilgrims
- Travel early. Morning departures avoid the afternoon heat and give you a full day at the shrine.
- Book ahead in feast season. Buses fill fast in late August / early September — reserve private seats online.
- Keep small change for ordinary TNSTC services and roadside refreshment stops.
- Carry water and snacks — not all ordinary buses make long meal halts.
- Mind your belongings at busy stands like Nagapattinam and Trichy Central.
